Verona. 2023 Opera Season Program at the Philharmonic Theater

The Arena Foundation presents the rich program of the 2023 opera season at Verona’s Teatro Filarmonico, which features six not-to-be-missed dates: well-known operas but also true rarities.

Opening the season is the four-act comic opera Le nozze di Figaro by W. A. Mozart, offered on four dates on January 22, 25, 27 and 29.

On Feb. 12, 15, 17 and 19 Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida will be staged, a true tribute to Franco Zeffirelli’s genius.

Beginning March 26, Werther, Jules Massenet’s masterpiece that has become the symbol of Romanticism, is staged for four performances (repeated on March 29 and 31 and April 2).

Highly anticipated is the fourth title: Hamlet, the artistic summa of Verona-born Franco Faccio (1840-1891), a work based on Shakespeare’s most famous title. The four performances on Oct. 22, 25,27 and 29 constitute the first Italian performance of the opera in contemporary times in the new Arena Foundation staging.

Double dates on Nov. 19, 22, 24 and 26: Il Parlatore eterno, Amilcare Ponchielli’s comic and unpublished gem, juxtaposed with Giacomo Puccini’s intense one-act Il Tabarro.

The Opera Season will conclude in December with one of Verdi’s most exciting and popular titles, Un Ballo in Maschera, offered on Dec. 17 and repeated on Dec. 20,22 and 23.
