THE FESTIVAL

“New Conversations-Vicenza Jazz” was born in 1996 on the initiative of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Vicenza and of the main sponsor Trivellato Mercedes Benz and immediately established itself, due to the particularity of the project, in the European panorama of spring festivals. From the first edition, the artistic direction has been signed by Riccardo Brazzale.

The period is in fact, since 1996, that of May and involves, for about ten days, the historical places of Vicenza, City of Palladio, included in the Unesco world list: first of all the Teatro Olimpico (the oldest covered theater in the world , built in 1585) but also the churches and ancient buildings, as well as theaters and auditoriums and the evocative outdoor places, from Piazza dei Signori to Corso Palladio and Campo Marzo, involving bars, restaurants, shops, cinemas, museums, exhibition venues and libraries.

The main characterization of the festival derives from having placed in contact and within classical spaces, such as the Palladian ones, a type of music with a strong innovative impact, as jazz is historically considered.

All this, not only giving voice to the biggest international names (Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Brad Mehldau, Jan Garbarek), but also rediscovering some old lions of tradition (John Lewis, Buddy De Franco, Barry Harris) or enhancing emerging young people (Stefano Bollani, Gwilym Simcock, Francesco Cafiso, Carla Cook, Ariel, Ibrahim Malouf), ranging from the mainstream (Dave Brubeck, Ray Brown, Toots Thielemans, Milt Jackson, Roy Haynes) to the historical avant-garde (Anthony Braxton, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra Arkestra, Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers) and contemporary (John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Ernst Reijseger, Uri Caine, Steve Coleman), from acoustic (Maria Schneider, Joe Lovano, Randy Weston, Abdullah Ibrahim, McCoy Tyner, Arturo Sandoval, Hiromi) to electric (Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Yellowjackets), from more intellectualistic music (Paul Bley, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy) to that which goes beyond jazz in strict sense (Buena Vista Social Club, Incognito, Vinicio Capossela, Roy Paci, Manu Dibango, Kocani Orkestar), without ever forgetting European jazz (John Surman, Richard Galliano, Stan Tracey, Joachim Kuhn, Michel Portal, Evan Parker).

Between exclusive projects and numerous collateral activities (seminars, happenings and art exhibitions, video and film reviews), every year “Vicenza Jazz” is renewed, attracting a very large audience and many professionals, as well as the attention of many journalists both Italian, European and American, for specialist publications, newspapers and radio and television broadcasters.
