Illuminated by the golden light of Piazza San Marco at sunset, the creations of the Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana tell the cultural richness of the city on the water, including carnival inspirations, craftsmanship and architectural suggestions
In the shadow of the bell tower of San Marco, a location that every year – in times that are not pandemic – hosts the traditional flight of the angel, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have created a spectacle of a different but equally surreal nature. On the evening of August 29, illuminated by the warm lights of the sunset, the new Dolce & Gabbana Haute Couture collection paraded under the amazed gaze of about 500 guests: among them, celebrities from all over the world, from Monica Bellucci to Kitty Spencer , passing through Helen Mirren, Kris Jenner, Jennifer Lopez.
As a prelude to the presentation, a twenty-minute performance halfway between carnival and Fellini’s narrative, in which singer Jennifer Hudson sang Turandot’s aria No Dorma, in a spectacular gold dress. A goosebumps introduction, which contributed to making the atmosphere of the parade even more magical, against the gothic background of Venice. And here the real show begins: the creations arrived on the catwalk respectively on 100 gondolas, lulled by the cool late summer breeze along the Doge’s Palace, worn by 100 models including Deva, daughter of Monica Bellucci, Jessie James and D’Lila Star, daughters Sean Combs and Leni, daughter of Heidi Klum. As already happened in the past, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have plunged into a – not at all simple – cultural reinterpretation, paying homage, in this case, to the lagoon city and its local craftsmanship through the lens of their own heritage. Sophisticated silks, velvets, brocades and details in glass and crystal, combined with embroidery and precious fabrics, have been perfectly mixed, creating a real synesthetic harmony.
From the hand-painted trompe l’œil tulle, to the double organza bustier dress, passing through a Georgette dress entirely embroidered with sequins, beads and crystals, the creations echoed the kaleidoscopic Murano glass, the unmistakable architecture of Venice and the decorations of the floors of San Marco. All this, punctuated by infinite waterfalls of satin, to reflect the contours of the city just like its canals. To crown this memorable picture, the unexpected touch of nature: a few drops of rain followed by a huge rainbow.
