Valentine’s Day: Veneto destinations that will make your heart beat

Here are some ideas for celebrating the most romantic day of the year: a fairy-tale weekend in Venice or Verona, at the Euganean Spas or at Lake Garda.

It’s hard not to fall in love in Venice. On Valentine’s Day, the most romantic city in the world becomes the perfect setting to celebrate love with dreamlike experiences. It starts with a gondola ride accompanied by a serenade to a typical restaurant for a candlelight dinner and then ends the evening in one of the historic palazzi overlooking the Grand Canal. However, nothing is more romantic than strolling through the calli of Venice at night and getting lost in its hidden corners that evoke the clandestine encounters of Giacomo Casanova with the ladies of the Venetian aristocracy.

Verona, the ‘city of eternal love’ and where the myth of Romeo and Juliet still hovers, is transformed on Valentine’s Day with the Verona In Love Festival scheduled from 10 to 14 February. The calendar also includes theatre and dance performances, photographic exhibitions and collective moments to express love as a kiss, a message, a dance step. Not to be missed in Piazza dei Signori is the suggestive heart-shaped market dedicated to the tastes, scents and manifestations of love. And for those who prefer running, even as a couple, the Romeo and Juliet Half Marathon, the most romantic marathon in the world, returns on Sunday 12 February.

The thermal baths of Abano and Montegrotto are perfect destinations for a romantic stay of wellness, culture and excellent food and wine. Castles, walled cities of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the famous Venetian Villas: all places that lend themselves to a Valentine’s weekend. While the hotels and wellness centres of Abano and Montegrotto will pamper lovers in search of relaxation and romance.

Another destination not to be missed is Lake Garda, which at the weekend dedicated to lovers reserves Lago di Garda in Love, the romantic kermesse involving the enchanting towns of Borghetto di Valeggio sul Mincio, Peschiera del Garda, Castelnuovo del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco, Campo di Brenzone sul Garda, and Malcesine. Walks, romantic selfie stations, music, tastings of typical products, and markets: there are plenty of opportunities to discover Lake Garda on the most romantic weekend of the year.
