In collaboration with the Union of Italian Centenary Enterprises, the award – financed by the historic Carpenè-Malvolti Winery – rewarded the author of the best thesis focusing on the theme “The space of memory as immanent inspiration: the role of Italian Centenary Enterprises”.

With a thesis entitled “The company visit as a heritage marketing tool and tourism product. An exploratory survey among companies in the food sector”, Andrea Barone, a student at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, is the winner of the second edition of the “Carpenè-Malvolti” Degree Prize, instituted by the Unione Imprese Centenarie Italiane – the association that embraces the longest-lived brands of Made in Italy with at least one hundred years of activity and of which Carpenè-Malvolti itself is proud to be a member by virtue of its 154 years since the foundation of the company – and financed by the same historic company of Conegliano.

“The institution of the ‘Carpenè-Malvolti’ Degree Award,” says Domenico Scimone, “has the mission of stimulating reflection on the cultural heritage of which the longest-lived companies in our country are custodians; a heritage of traditions and knowledge linked to the territory of origin that are the basis of entrepreneurial longevity. Carpenè-Malvolti, which has always been sensitive to the training aspirations of the new generations with a view to training new figures to be valorised in the socio-economic context of reference, confirms with this recognition its commitment to supporting their cultural and professional growth. Just as the founder of the company Antonio Carpenè was a forerunner, founding the Oenological School of Conegliano and dedicating his life to study and teaching, in the same way the Generations that have followed him have chosen to consistently pass on his message”.

The award ceremony was held on Saturday 22 October at the Cinema Hall in Procida, Italian Capital of Culture 2022, and was part of the calendar of celebrations for Procida Italian Capital of Culture 2022, continuing the tradition of linking the award ceremony to the cities designated as ‘Italian Capitals of Culture’ from time to time. Together with the Centum Prize, which this year was awarded to the Sardinian trumpeter – as well as creator and director of the Time in Jazz Festival in Berchidda – Paolo Fresu, for having been able to re-launch his homeland through music.

Eugenio Alphandery, President of the Unione Imprese Centenarie Italiane, said: “This Degree Award is confirmation of the attention that our Union reserves for the new generations, and specifically for the university world,” said Eugenio Alphandery, President of the Unione Imprese Centenarie Italiane. “Our member companies are repositories of a rich historical and cultural heritage, a heritage that in some cases is thousands of years old, and it is our duty to promote these values for the benefit of young people.

In addition to the winner Andrea Barone and Domenico Scimone for Carpenè-Malvolti, the ceremony was also attended by the President of the Unione Imprese Centenarie Italiane Eugenio Alphandery and the local institutions with the Mayor of Procida Raimondo Ambrosino, the Procida City Councillor for Productive Activities Leonardo Costagliola, the Director of Procida Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2022 Agostino Riitano, the CUR Delegate of the Regional University Committee of Campania Prof. Vincenzo Lova and the Procida Regional Government official Prof. Vincenzo Lova. Organised this year in collaboration with CUR-Comitato Universitario Regionale della Campania, the ‘Carpenè-Malvolti’ Degree Award was aimed at students who had obtained a master’s degree from a university in Campania in the period 2021-2022, discussing a thesis on the theme ‘The space of memory as immanent inspiration: The role of Italian Centenary Enterprises’, renewing the commitment that the company has always made to the new generations and also continuing to invest in the strategic nature of the historical message it carries, namely the importance of knowing and sharing history to determine the future.

The supervisor of the winning thesis is Prof. Antonella Garofano, Marketing and Management Associate at the Department of Economics of the University of Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’, who explained how the winner’s work is part of a broader research project in which she has been engaged for years, together with other colleagues, on the issues of enhancing the historical and cultural heritage contained in long-lived companies that have often exceeded one hundred years of activity.
