The Col di Lana, which was the ‘Col del Sangue’ (Blood Col) during the First World War, today offers a unique opportunity to visit the scenarios that saw terrible battles and gruelling clashes in the first trench warfare, and to enjoy spectacular landscapes of rocks, snow and ice.
The Col is in fact the centre of the ski route that touches military posts and tunnels dating back to the 1915-18 conflict, including the notable outposts of Sass de Stria, Lagazuoi, Tofane, Marmolada and Padon. But it also takes us to the most beautiful Dolomite peaks: the Civetta and Pelmo, visible from Col dei Baldi, the Cinque Torri and the Tofane, all of which can be admired from the highest point the route reaches, Lagazuoi, at an altitude of 2,778 m.
The length and variety of the route, which includes descents on skis, ascents via lifts and transfers by various means, will certainly leave mountain lovers satisfied, taking them over exciting passes such as those of Campolongo, Padon, Fedaia and Falzarego.
The Tour is a medium-difficulty ring-route, 82.5 km long and can be covered on skis for 31 km, by ski bus for 32 km, by ski lifts for 18 km and by horse-drawn carriage for 1.5 km. The maximum departure time is 9 a.m. and it takes about 7-8 hours to complete, including a break for lunch. You can start from Arabba or Malga Ciapèla.
