Journey time: about 4 hours
The excursion to Lake Sorapis is one of the most beautiful trips in the Dolomites. The lake is in fact well known for its intense color, with shades ranging from blue to water green. This color comes from the very fine rock dust brought by the glacier of the same name which, with the melting during the spring and summer, gives life to the lake.
Starting at Passo Tre Croci, follow the path n ° 215. It is a varied and panoramic path, with various ups and downs but with a slight overall difference in height through a beautiful forest and with a view of the Cristallo, Popena, the Cadini di Misurina and the Tre Peaks of Lavaredo. After a first flat part, a more challenging stretch follows with some metal stairs and exposed sections along a flat ledge, equipped with metal ropes.
After these short aided sections, you will soon arrive at the Vandelli Refuge, a welcoming and authentic refuge located in a breathtaking position in the center of the grandiose amphitheater on the north side of Sorapis, almost on the edge of the base where the waterfall emerges and falls. . From the refuge, originally built in 1890, it is possible to admire, to the north, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Misurina and its lake and, not far away, the magnificent alpine lake set like a gem in the mountain, overlooked by Il Dito of God (2,603 m). The lake is dug into the rock and devoid of surface emissaries; in fact, its waters reach by underground the great rocky threshold of the glacial shelf, exiting in the “el Piss” waterfall. From this name derives that of the mountain group “Sora el Piss”, or rather above the El Piss waterfall. During the winter season, the many waterfalls freeze, allowing fans to practice ice climbing.
For the return, it is advisable to follow the same path taken on the outward journey, along path no. 215.
The excursion is very popular and the parking lot near Passo Tre Croci is crowded; it is therefore advisable to take advantage of the bus service from the bus station in Cortina. In the high season months it is advisable to leave early in the morning to avoid crowds.
